I have been a motorcyclist for all of my life. My dad started it by taking us children out in his motorbike and side car when I was just a toddler.

At the age of 18 I bought my first brand new BMW, a R75/7, in 1977. I have owned mostly BMW bikes ever since. The latest one is a K100RS 16 valve made in 1991, a classic. The best for me was probably a brand new K1200GT bought in 2004. My wife rides a very smart BMW F800ST. Having worked on aircraft all of my life in the Royal Air Force (RAF) I am not frightened to pick up a spanner!

I like to have something mechanical to do as can be seen on my last blog https://bmwk100rs.wordpress.com/.   That bike is now finished and runs very well, but there is nothing more that needs to be done to it. Then, along came a running 1998 Ducati ST2. I do happen to know that Ducatis need maintenance and there are things to improve, so off we trundled with car and trailer, and bought it.

It joins the K100RS, F800ST and the 125 monkey bike in the garage.

Update: Readers may have noticed that the Ducati 848 joined the fleet back in the summer. Why the 848? Probably because it is one of the most beautiful bikes in the world, a piece of art and something that even has non-bikers stopping and looking at when it is parked. Apart from that I have never owned a pure sports bike and at 168 kg and 138 bhp, it is an absolute joy to ride.

    I came across your page and was astounded by the different mods youve made and I think it was awesome.. I had a question on your height adjustment did u keep the board underneath the tire or after u ran the support did u move the board?? Also I’d love to get your thoughts on a couple of mods I’m lookin too do??

      The board was there to make lifting the wheel easy when fitting the bolts to the new adjuster. After the adjuster was fitted there was no further use for the board.

    Hey thank you for your site. I own a 98 ST2 and it’s awesome to see the improvements you’ve made. You have a high quality of detail and you can tell that you spend a lot of time making your modifications “the right way” vs just slapping something in with no consideration for maintainability/use.

      Thank you Jeremy, it is great to know that someone is still reading my ramblings! My wife has abandoned her BMW and is using the ST2 now and prefers it. The ST2 is just about as we want it now, apart from the wife wanting it painting red or pink perhaps. The 848 is also nearing completion, I have just about finished the final headlight on that, which will bring it bang up to date. The ST2 is a much better all rounder than the 848 in that it has enough power for our needs, the 848 has too much, and is a comfortable bike to ride.

    Great site, I too have some old bikes, including a 67 M3!. Mine is repainted to look similar to a Mach1.It was probably in the same batch as yours. Spent some time as a race bike so has been a bit overtuned for the road,Revs to over 10 in a blink, Hard work to ride but satisfying.Done a few thousand miles on it, Goes to the IOM every year. I also have an 860 bevel ,a Norton 99 and a !936 Rudge Ulster,Also work on 2 sons bikes?cars, Norton,SV650/yamaha ,Merc 3.5 ,Golf,Marlin Kit car,etc etc!, . I also drive thro France to Italy most years and camp.Live Nr Biggin Hill and get to watch the Spitfire overhead most days!. Life is terrible !!!.

    Hi, I thought I would let you know how it went on my ST2 with the brush change. Brilliant. really helped. The reason for thisnote is my hot cranking issue persisted. Starter stalling out sometimes. You can check it out yourself, but I ended up adding a second earth onto the starter body clamp bolt at the back. Also just a suggestion, as I did not do it. Just clean up the starter body, where the new brush plate will clamp up. This is the return contact point from the 2nd brush to the started body and on through the engine to the normal negative cable on the crankcase. Luckily I had previously changed the main cables and still had the previous ones, which were good. The earth strap on the ST2 reaches nicely from the battery to the end of the starter motor. I had bought a DC clamp ammeter as was so frustrated with my issue. Yes both earth cables take a good wack of current. I did at the same time swap the starter solenoid. Took a punt from a blog suggestion to use a 1200cc Aprilia one. Was £11.80 vs £38 for a Ducati one. Certainly the solenoid was tired. With both fixes, she jumps off the button now.       Thanks for your input Richard. I would agree with everything that you say, and would reinforce the fact that you can never have enough earth. The starter solenoids are interchangeable with any bike solenoid and even generic ones from ebay are better than a Ducati one that is 15+ years old.
